His primary focus in his youth was music, particularly folk music and blues on the guitar, and later, experimental jazz on the saxophone.. He attended the University of British Columbia with majors in Music and Classical Theatre. He left school to perform music professionally, which he did from 1969 to 1974. During this time, he participated as soloist and ensemble player in numerous concerts. For almost 2 years Laz was the Òlead boyÓ for noted jazz/blues guitar master, Blind (Reverend) Gary Davis. and was the featured accompanist on DavisÕ last recording.

In 1975, Laz attended Simon Fraser University, majoring in pre-medicine. While there, he discovered modern dance, leading to a new direction in his commitment to the performing arts. Within months, he was studying with notable teachers including Phylis Lamhut, Gladys Bailin, Albert Reid, and Mara McBirney. He also began performing with local Vancouver dance theater companies.

He studied dance in New York with Alwyn Nikolais, Merce Cunningham, Maggie Black, Jennifer Muller, Laura Dean, and others.

He became Associate Director of Kei Takei's Moving Earth in 1981, and has since performed to considerable critical acclaim in hundreds of concerts both in solo and ensemble situations in 15 countries worldwide. Laz has been lead and principal dancer in many of Ms. TakeiÕs most famous works.
